Preparing Damaged Concrete for a New Finish

Patio Concrete Corner Repair — Mesa, AZ
Before we could coat this Mesa patio, the severely cracked concrete corner needed to be removed and rebuilt. We removed the damaged section, rebuilt the corner, and prepared the repaired area for coating. These photos show the original damage, the rebuilt corner before coating, and the completed patio.
How We Prepare Concrete for Coating
Assess the surface. We inspect for cracks, chips, pitting, damaged edges, and existing coating problems. We evaluate moisture conditions and discuss the intended use of the finished floor.

Grind and remove existing coatings. We use commercial diamond grinders to prepare the concrete, with smaller equipment for edges and detailed areas. Where necessary, we remove existing coatings before proceeding. Commercial vacuum systems help control dust during grinding.

Complete necessary repairs. Depending on the damage, preparation may include filling cracks and divots, repairing pitted areas, or removing and rebuilding damaged sections, as shown in our Mesa patio project.
Prepare for the selected finish. We grind repairs smooth where appropriate and thoroughly clean the surface before applying the selected coating or finish. The concrete’s condition and product requirements determine the preparation needed.
